Nuclear deposits in Romania
These last two years building a radioactive medium-sized final storehouse in the Saligny commune 10 kilometers far from Cernavodă nuclear station was on the Electro-Nuclear agenda. The purpose of the communication project was to increase people’s awareness concerning the destination of nuclear waste in Romania and the danger they represent. The sociologic research conducted by Graphic Line and Terra Mileniul III has proven that only 10% of the population knew about this warehouse and people were not consulted on this matter. It was intended that people with power of decision understand that the problems of nuclear waste must also be known by people who are vulnerable to these warehouses and that they have the right to be consulted and informed about depositing waste in the vicinity of their houses. This idea submits to the principle of environmental justice, according to which any economical project (and even more the dangerous ones) must be approved by the inhabitants affected by it, no matter their ethnic group, social status, level of culture or income. This principle is crucial because most of the people who are mainly affected by the unsustainable economical planning are the vulnerable ones, the poor, the marginalized or the minorities.
The concept developed by Graphic Line has an ambivalent character reaching both the decision-makers in the Electro-Nuclear industry and also common people in whose vicinity the waste deposit will be built.
